Biography

A voice rooted in Hawraman

Farzad Mehdi Nia was born in the village of Zhivar in the Hawraman Takht district of Kurdistan Province, Iran. He began his professional music career in 2013 and reached a wider Kurdish audience through Kurd Idol in 2017, finishing as runner-up.

His artistic work is centred on preserving and revitalising Siah Chmaneh, the ancient Hawrami vocal tradition known for emotional storytelling and themes of love, longing, migration and loss. Through contemporary arrangements and intercultural collaboration, he brings this distinctive tradition to new audiences without losing its cultural roots.

Farzad founded Hawraman Group in Sweden in 2024 and serves as its lead vocalist and artistic director. Working with musicians from Iran, Sweden and Finland, he builds a bridge between traditional Kurdish sound and contemporary world music.
